Cheshire resident Nicole J. Martone, an English teacher at John F. Kennedy High School in Waterbury, has been awarded a $125 classroom grant from Kappa Delta Pi Educational Foundation headquartered in Indianapolis.  Martone will use her funds, during the 2012- 2013 school year, for her 10th grade students to participate in non-fiction Ancient Rome topic presentations in conjunction with teaching Julius Caesar, aligning her instruction to Common Core State Standards.

A 12-year teacher, Martone submitted a written proposal last fall describing the classroom project or materials she wanted to provide to her students and how the funds would be allocated. A review committee evaluated all educator proposals and selected the recipients in December 2012.

Kappa Delta Pi firmly believes that a teacher’s effectiveness has the greatest impact on students’ achievement and learning. As part of its efforts to provide members with tools to be more effective educators, Kappa Delta Pi offers Classroom Teacher Grants.

These grants provide members who are practicing teachers with funds to support specific innovative and creative programs or activities at the classroom level. These projects are designed to engage students in the learning process through interactive activities, to purchase classroom supplies, or fund field trips for which school funds aren’t available.

The Kappa Delta Pi Foundation awards Classroom Teacher Grants of $125 each every year to member teachers across the country. The Foundation also funds more than 70 local and national annual scholarships, literacy grants, and professional development courses.

More information on the foundation and Society can be found at www.kdp.org.
