Military Veterans Invited to Cheshire Event

Cheshire High School's BRAVE club to recognize vets on Nov. 12.

The Cheshire High School student organization called "B.R.A.V.E." (Bringing Remembrance to All Veterans Everywhere), is planning its second year of recognition events for veterans.

Club advisor and Social Studies Chair Ralph Zingarella said the event is being conducted by about 50 members of BRAVE, which is in its second year of organizing veteran's outreach activities.

The recognition day will begin at 9 a.m. with a welcome to veterans in the high school's Commons with free coffee breakfast items baked by the students.

Veterans will then be escorted to the flag pole and memorial area in front of the school for the program at 10 a.m. Students will address the vets and their families, Zingarella said, to let them know what it means to honor those who've served in the military. "They've learned the importance of serving their country. Some have changed their career choice and want to go to West Point or the Naval Academy," due to their membership in BRAVE, he said.

The RAM band will play and members of the VIP chorus will entertain at the event.  "The entire student body will dismiss for the ceremony. We're asking everybody to wear red, white and blue," Zingarella said.

Parents are invited to attend as well. "For parents, it's important to see how kids engage in community service and patriotism. It's an act of love for the kids at school," Zingarella said. "Kids dispel the myth. They have a sense of patriotism," he added.

Zingarella said transportation to the event, if needed, is expected to be provided through the Cheshire Senior Center and Elim Park. The program is handicapped accessible and students will escort the veterans to the Commons when they arrive at the school's front door, he said.

Veterans and their families, as well as student's parents, who plan to attend are asked to RSVP by phone at 203-250-2547 so organizers can accommodate all the attendees.
