A License to Skate: YMCA Skate Park to Open on Saturday

Residents in Cheshire in third-grade or older who belong to the YMCA will be able to begin taking advantage of skating opportunities at Camp Sloper beginning Saturday.

The following was released by the Southington-Cheshire YMCA on Monday.

On Saturday, May 4, the YMCA Camp Sloper Skate Park — Southington’s Skate Park — will open for 2013.  The spring hours for the Skate Park are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Saturdays from Noon – 5 p.m.

Again this year, the YMCA Skate Park will offer free skateboarding lessons to anyone interested in getting on a board for the first time.  The free skateboarding lessons will run during open hours on Saturdays from 1:00-2:30PM.  The decision to introduce free skateboarding lessons follows the overall goal of the YMCA Skate Park: to be the perfect place to learn to skate.  Helmets are required for all skaters, and there is staff present during all open hours to ensure that every skater is following this safety policy.

Additional padding is recommended to maximize safety. All skaters must have a 2013 waiver form signed by a parent/guardian on file in order to skate, unless they are 18 years old or over. The YMCA Skate Park is free for all Southington residents and members of the Southington and Cheshire YMCAs who are in 3rd grade or older. Parents must accompany all 3rd and 4th graders during their time in the YMCA Skate Park.

For questions regarding the YMCA Skate Park, contact Shane Altwies, Outdoor Center Program Director, by phone at (860) 621-8194, ext. 308, or by e-mail at saltwies@sccymca.org.
