Cheshire Grad Aliotta Sets Record at Monmouth

Shot put mark highlights freshman's season; Sea Dogs Swim Team wins Age Group Championship.

Monmouth College's Rachel Aliotta (2010 Cheshire graduate) threw a school-record and personal best 47 feet, 4 1/4 inches in the shot put for a third-place finish at the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference and IC4A Track & Field Championships March 5 in Boston.

Aliotta earned All-ECAC honors with her performance. She is the -record holder in the shot put (44-11 1/4 indoors; 45-1/2 outdoors). In high school, Aliotta earned All-American honors and was New England champion three times.

Elon University's Julie Hart (2010) finished fifth in the 800 meters in a school-record 2:14.21 at the Southern Conference Championships at Clemson (S.C.). Feb. 28.

Elaina Heiple (2007) had two assists for Southern Connecticut State's women's lacrosse team in a 19-9 loss to American International College Wednesday in Springfield, Mass. Heiple has seven goals and three assists for 10 points for the Owls (0-5).

Mike Devine (2010) scored twice but Eastern Connecticut State men's lacrosse team fell at Amherst College 12-7 on Tuesday. Devine has eight goals and one assists for nine points for Eastern (4-2).

Bryan Dorsey (2007) went 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI in game one of a doubleheader sweep, 7-5 and 11-7, for Southern Connecticut State over Merrimack Saturday in North Andover, Mass. Through March 23, Dorsy is hitting .322 with 13 RBI and 17 runs scored for No. 5 nationally-ranked Southern Connecticut State (18-0).

Kim Silva (2009) of UConn (11-12) went 1-for-3 in a 1-0 victory over Columbia Wednesday at Hempstead, N.Y. Silva was 2-for-3 with three RBI in a 5-3 loss to Georgetown in game one of a doubleheader Saturday in Washington. She was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored in an 11-7 game two victory. Silva is hitting .341 with 11 runs scored, seven RBI and an on-base percentage of .453 for the Huskies.

Bucknell's Todd Heritage (2010) scored two second-half goals, including one that gave the Bison the lead for good, and added an assist to help rally the men's lacrosse team (7-2) to an 11-9 victory over Albany in Lewisburg, Pa., Saturday. The Bison are ranked 17th nationally. Heritage has 11 goals and six assists for 17 points this season.

Katherine Eddy (2010) scored two goals, one each in two Colby College (5-0) victories, an 18-3 win over Eastern Connecticut State last Sunday and a 17-11 win over Union Tuesday, both games in Florida.

Freshmen Basketball

The Cheshire High freshmen basketball team won the Prof Gallitto Invitational Basketball Tournament March 12 at Middletown High School. The team, coached by Cheshire graduate Pete DeBisschop and Steve Harris, went 12-8 this past winter season.

Members of the team included: Tommy Arisco, Paul Bronke, Mark Dietrich, Brett Duglenski, Reid Duglenski, Matt Millea, Chibueze Njoku, Pedro Pena, Tyler Post, Jonathan Rizzo, Wesley Robertson, Matt Samuelson, Dan Schock, Kyle Waldron, Carlton White.

The Cheshire YMCA Sea Dog Swim Club won the Connecticut Age Group Championships at in Middletown on March 13.

The Sea Dogs' (13-14) 200-yard medley relay of Sara Barlok, Brittany Driscoll, Holland Driscoll and Helen Park won in a state resident record of 1 minute, 51,65 seconds.

Brittany Driscoll also won the 200 (1:54.85), 500 (5:06.55) and 1,650 (17:29.79) freestyles.

Holland Driscoll won the 200 breaststroke (2:26.12), an event she won in 2010, and Park was second (2:26.99). Holland Driscoll also placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.64), while Park was ninth (1:11.24).

Barlok was third in the 100 backstroke (1:00.35) and fourth in the 200 backstroke (2:12.93). Park finished third in the 100 butterfly (58.98).

In the 200 butterfly, Brittany Driscoll placed fourth (2:11.10), Park fifth (2:11.95) and Lindsay Smalec seventh (2:17.50). Smalec was also seventh (2:15.90) in the 200 individual medley and Park was eighth (2:16.19).

Brittany Driscoll finished second (4:35.37) in the 400 IM and Madeline Snow was sixth (4:46.65).

The Sea Dogs 200 freestyle relay of Holland and Brittany Driscoll, Denise Costello and Brittany Steinfeld placed fourth in 1:43.34. The 400 free relay of Holland and Brittany Driscoll, Steinfeld and Emma Gawronski was third in 3:45.66. The 400 medley relay of Snow, Steinfeld, Smalec and Gawronski placed third in 4:13.44.

Soccer

The Academica Futebol Club U-16 boys soccer team won the Ironbound Spring Kick-Off Tournament in Newark, N.J. March 21. Academica defeated FC Vistula Thunder (N.J.) 2-0 in the championship game.
