Cheshire Sending Three Grapplers to State Open

Wrestlers William Janes, Daniel Massucci and Jacob Cervero are heading to New Haven Friday with high hopes of bringing individual gold back to Cheshire High School

The Cheshire High School wrestling team finished in the middle of the pack during the state tournament over the weekend, but the performances of three grapplers have the school still in contention for individual gold this weekend.

Despite finishing 14th out of 27 teams in the Class LL tournament, the Rams saw strong performances from Jacob Cervero, Daniel Massucci and William Janes. The three wrestlers will now fight for individual gold and bragging rights at the CIAC State Open this Friday and Saturday in New Haven.

The Rams were led over the past weekend by Janes, who earned second place honors in the 182-pound division, just narrowly missing a first-place finish following a 3-2 loss to Brian Donovan of Manchester High School.

Massucci finished fourth in the 138-pound division and Cervero finished fifth in the 132-pound division to round out those who qualified for the individual tournament on Feb. 22 – 23.

The three qualifiers represent an increase in representation for Cheshire High School in 2013. Last year, the school sent just two grapplers to the State Open.

The wrestlers will now go head to head with the 24 best wrestlers in their weight class at the open, which will be held at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven. The tournament will take place starting at 4 p.m. Friday and continuing at 10:15 a.m. Saturday.
