Cheshire’s 47-Game Win Streak Snapped to Oxford

The Rams are known for their volleyball success, but after spending nearly three seasons as an unbeatable team, Cheshire High School’s impressive win streak was finally brought to an end.

The Oxford High School volleyball team has set lofty goals this season. One was to win a state championship, another was to end Cheshire's impressive winning streak that has spanned nearly three seasons. They can now cross the latter off their list after defeating the Rams in three straight sets Wednesday night in Cheshire. 

"We shocked a lot of people tonight," said senior tri-captain Bobby Costigan. "Cheshire is a great program; we knew we'd need to play a nearly mistake-free game. And that's what we did. Many people stepped up for us."

Cheshire's win streak ends at 47 games, but the team is hopeful that with the end of one impressive era, a new one could soon follow. Meanwhile, the Wolverines, who finished as state Class M runner ups last season, are 4-0 and setting their sights on a league and state championship.

"I'm still in shock; I'm extremely pumped," said Wolverine’s junior tri-captain Pat Cragan. "We wanted to be the team that snapped the streak, and we did."

Oxford was led by Cragan, 23 assists, Costigan, 12 kills, and Nathan Seibert, 10 kills and five blocks. Oxford Coach Jeff Giovacchino said it was an overall team effort against Cheshire.

"We blocked extremely well; their hitters were having a difficult time getting the ball down," he said. "We were also digging the ball well; our defense did an excellent job."
