Rams Baseball Wins Two of Three for Week

But ends it with one-run loss to East Haven; boys volleyball, girls golf, still unbeaten.

The Cheshire baseball team won two out of three this past week, with the highlight a dramatic 5-4, 11-inning victory over Shelton at home Thursday night in a Southern Connecticut Conference Housatonic Division game.

But the week ended on a sour note as the Rams (10-4, 4-1 Housatonic) dropped a 6-5 decision to East Haven (5-8) in a game in which Cheshire came close but never really seemed completely in it.

”We're talented but the problem is, they have to understand that it's their team and buy into it and lead," Cheshire head coach Bill Mrowka said of his seniors. "Leading just doesn't mean you're a captain and you get to walk out there during ground rules. It means you actually have a role. You actually have to do things.

"I'm not seeing that out of our seniors. We have a couple that are doing it and
eight of them that are not doing it. We need that leadership out of all of them
and we're not getting it. We're going to change that really early in the morning tomorrow (Saturday)."

The week started well. The Rams defeated Guilford for the second time this season
with an 18-12 victory at home Tuesday. Matt Jefferis had four hits, including two triples, Dom Severino had three hits, including a home run, and each drove
in five runs.

Ryan Fowler (3-1) started and worked four innings.

In the Shelton game, Ryan Rougeot hit a a walk-off single that plated Serverino in the home win. Tyler Robertson had three hits and two runs scored and Connor David two hits.

Fowler had a much rockier time in his start against East Haven, in which he gave up five runs in the third inning, aided by two walks and a wild pitch. Jefferis finished with three hits, including two doubles, and Robertson went 2-for-4. Jordan Kubilus worked four innings of scoreless relief, allowing just one hit.

"Jordan came in and pitched well, which was good because we did not get a good effort out of Ryan," Mrowka said. "He's been struggling. It's put us in holes in games. We've been able to hit our way out of it but we just weren't able to do that today."

Kierstyn Bourdeau hit an RBI single in the top of the seventh to drive in the game-winner as Cheshire defeated Daniel Hand 6-5 Monday in Madison. Lauren
