Rams Girls Lacrosse Starts Season 2-0

Boys lacrosse also wins first two; Ashia Wright ties school record in 100 meters.

The Cheshire girls lacrosse team enjoyed a strong first week of the spring season with two impressive victories.

Jess Sudock netted eight points to the lead the Rams to a 15-4 Southern Connecticut Conference season opening victory over Hamden Wednesday.

Sudock scored five goals with three assists, Kathleen Kalbian scored four times, Maria Blois had three goals and two assists and Alyssa Hague scored twice.

Cheshire took its second win of week with a 16-6 SCC victory over Branford Friday behind Hague's seven goals and two assists. Kalbian added three goals and Blois and Sudock each had two.

The Rams have a busy week coming up playing at Hand Tuesday at 6:30 p.m, home against Fairfield Ludlowe Thursday at 4:30 p.m. and at South Windsor Saturday at 10 a.m.

Boys Lacrosse

The Rams rallied for an 8-7 victory over Hand in their opener Wednesday. Spencer Hackett scored the game-winner, one of his two goals.

Cheshire made it two in row with a 6-2 victory over Guilford Friday. Goalie Will Devine made nine saves in the win. Kevin Adams and Tom Dupont each scored twice and Matt Dupont had a goal and an assist for the Rams.

Cheshire plays at Fairfield Prep Monday at 4 p.m., at Southington Thursday at 4:30 p.m. and plays as the home team at Western Connecticut State vs. Bay Shore (N.Y.) Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

Baseball

Ryan Rougeot pitched a two-hitter while striking out six to help the Rams secure their first victory of the season, a 6-0 win over Guilford Friday.

After reaching on an error, Max Slade scored the only run Cheshire needed on a double by Matt Jeffris.

The No. 2-ranked Rams dropped their opener to West Haven Wednesday 5-3. The Westies are ranked No. 8 in the state. West Haven's Eric Stone tossed a six-hitter against the Rams.  Cheshire starting pitcher Slade also allowed six hits and struck out six in six innings.

This week, the Rams meet Hamden at home Monday at 4 p.m. Cheshire Patch will cover the game. They are at Jonathan Law Wednesday at 4 p.m. and home Friday against Hand at 4 p.m.

Softball

Cheshire started 1-1, winning its opener 8-1 over Mercy Wednesday, but dropping a 4-3 decision to Daniel Hand on Friday.

In the opener, starting pitcher Nicole D'Amato pitched a five-hitter with five strikeouts and went 2-for-3 with two RBI, and Caroline Kushner hit a grand slam in the seventh.

In the loss to Hand, Anna Marcucilli hit two doubles, drove in a run and scored, and Ali Giannone, who was earlier in the week named one of the state's Top 25 players by The New Haven Register, hit an RBI double. D'Amato struck out eight in the loss.

Cheshire plays at West Haven Monday at 4 p.m., the home game against Jonathan Law on Wednesday at 4 p.m. will be covered by Cheshire Patch and at Branford Friday at 4 p.m.

Boys Tennis

The Rams took a 4-3 victory over Hand on Friday after dropping a 4-3 decision to Amity in a completion Thursday of a suspended match in the opener.

Doubles team Drew Henderson-Tanner Barros provided the difference Friday with a three-set victory (6-0, 1-6, 6-4) to break a 3-3 tie in the match. Singles victories came from No. 1 Bryan Adams (7-5, 7-6), No. 3 Tyler Hajar (7-6, 6-2) and No. 5 Brendan Pier (6-4, 6-3).

In the opener, Adams, Hajar and Jeremy Reichenthal each earned three-set singles victories.

Cheshire's only match this week is Monday at Hamden at 3:45 p.m.

Girls Tennis

Cheshire dropped a 4-3 decision to Hand on Friday after losing the opener 7-0 to Amity to fall to 0-2.

On  Friday, the Rams received  victories from No. 1 singles Erica Larsen (7-5, 6-1) and Taylor Strange (6-2, 2-6, 6-4) and a doubles win from No. 1 team of Alyssa Carafano and Alex Hirt (6-3, 6-4).

Cheshire hosts Sheehan on Monday at 3:45 p.m in its only match of the week.

Boys Volleyball

The Rams opened with a 25-17, 25-19, 25-19 victory over Danbury on Wednesday and followed that with a second 3-0 win (25-11, 25-12, 25-7) over Conard on Friday.

In the opener, Nate Howard had 16 kills and three blocks, Joe Bahgat nine kills and setter Ray Brumleve 24 assists.

In Friday's win, Ryan Cuppernull had 10 kills and two blocks, Howard nine kills, two blocks, Bahgat 11 kills and six digs and Brumleve 28 assists. Tyler Seigard added 11 digs.

The Rams host Hand Monday at 6 p.m. and play at Amity Friday at 5 p.m.

Track & Field

Jake Scinto won four events in Cheshire's season opening 76-74 loss to Sheehan Wednesday. Scinto won the 100 meters in 11.1 seconds, the triple jump (43 feet, 6 inches), long jump (19-4 1/2) and high jump (6-3).

Other individual winners included: Eric Zdanowski in the 110 hurdles (16.7), Phil Caldwell, 800 meters (2:06.00), Sean Mueller, 1,600 (4:35.6) and Nick Ritchie, shot put (37-5).

The girls swept East Haven (79-69) and Wilbur Cross (87-62) in a tri-meet at East Haven Wednesday in their opener.

Ashia Wright tied the school outdoor 100-meter record while winning in 12.4. Sarah Fusco won the 400 meters (1:02.6) and Tori Wickenheisser the 3,200 (12:54). Breslyn Goodison was a double field winner in the shot put (31-4 1/2) and javelin (86-8), and Ariel Greene took the discus (93-1).

The boys compete against Shelton Tuesday at home at 3:45 p.m and at the Record-Journal meet Friday at Sheehan at 3:30 p.m.

The girls are at Amity Tuesday at 3:45 p.m. in their only meet of the week.

Rugby

The club team lost to Staples 29-12 in the opener. Kyle Bickell and Austin Melillo scored for Cheshire.

Local Sports

Elizabeth McDonald of the Cheshire YMCA Sea Dogs won two bronze medals at the Short Course National Swimming Championships in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., this weekend with third-place finishes in the 50- and 100-yard freestyles.

She also helped the 800 freestyle relay along with Brittany Driscoll, Karen Novak and Justine Ress place sixth. Ress was sixth in the 200 backstroke.

Connor Maher of the boys Sea Dogs placed sixth in the 200 backstroke.
