Community Farm Harvest Re-Scheduled to Beat Arrival of Irene

Volunteers at Boulder Knoll Community Farm worked Saturday to bring in the weekly harvest a day early to avoid the storm. To minimize crop loss, workers anchored tomatoes cages and dug up potatoes that could get too wet.

Volunteers scrambled to remove a solar panel from a hoop house at Boulder Knoll Community Farm Saturday and worked to secure equipment to prevent as much damage as possible from hurricane-force winds this weekend.

Farmer Brenda Caldwell said crews at the two-acre CSA farm also staked tomato plants and pulled up potatoes that would likely have spoiled if left in the saturated ground.

Farm shares were harvested today rather than Sunday to beat the storm. This is the 11th week of a 16-week harvest, Caldwell said.
