Sign Goes Green Thanks to Eagle Scout Project

New sign is a welcome sight at Parks and Recreation Department on South Main Street

It took more than 150 hours to plan, build and install the new sign for the Parks and Recreation Department's Youth Center at 559 So. Main St.

Eagle Scout Rico Saccoccio, 18, from Troop 198 worked for months to complete his project to replace the old wooden sign at the highly visible location next to Cheshire High School, where he is a senior.

"The Eagle Scout has to plan and carry out the project," said Rico's father, Joe Saccoccio. The projects must be completed before the scout turns 18, he added.

The sign was built by long-time Scout Master Bob Thatcher of Troop 90. He also helped install the sign on May 11.

To reach the Eagle Scout level requires a long-term commitment. "Most stuck with it for the last 12 years," Joe Saccoccio said.

Other Eagle Scout projects can be seen around town, Saccoccio said. He said a new set of stairs at Cheshire Park were built by scouts as are bridges on trails at Bartlem Park. New signs at Bartlem Park and the Beachport housing complex off West Main Street were also Eagle Scout projects, he said.

Thank you Rico Saccocio and everyone involved with troop 198. This is an incredible job and I know town residents greatly appreciate the time and energy devoted to the project. We owe a debt of gratitude to the many scouts that have helped make improvements to town and properties. I know scots have also been involved in service work projects for the Cheshire Land Trust and other local non-profits. Keep up the great work
