Today I received an email from Cheshire Lacrosse. Recently, a member of our Club had items stolen from a car during a practice session at Bartlem Park. Please be aware and take measures to either secure your valuables in a locked trunk and/or lock your vehicle.
Immediately I thought hey maybe the kid wasn't kidding when he told the old man he didn't want to practice.
Come on, during practice? There is a definition to petty theft. It reads:

- insignificant: of little importance
- narrow-minded: narrow-minded in nature
- mean: spiteful in character
Who can be stupid enough to break into a car while practice is in session with about a million Cheshire parents there in attendance? Then again someone might say (not me) who could be stupid enough not to lock your car?
Locking a car isn't about hitting a button. It is about living in a community where you can walk away from your belongings knowing that others have your back. We all want to be a part of this community. We all want to believe that we can leave home and not have to worry about locking our doors. Cheshire is a place that lends you to embrace this concept. Perhaps this is why we are targeted.

The town needs to instill harsher penalties like making petty thefts do all of your yard-work for the entire year; weeding, dethatching with golf shoes, mowing, removing poison ivy branches, and most importantly shoveling your driveway in the winter. Turn them loose at my house and I can assure you that it would be the end of their petty career. Ask my kids, covering your back can take on a whole new meaning.
