I agree that a permanent structure should be strongly considered. This town is sometimes penny-wise…Read More and pound foolish. Some background, many years ago a generous family, the Bowman's, had put pipes in the ground behind the High school for a swimming pool well before a town pool was discussed. Did the town ever consider it? NO, They went with their grand plans to build super pool. Oh yes, they the town, said let save money and put up a bubble. What they didn't say that it will cost extra money to put it up and take it down - DUH. So they spent millions of our tax dollars in lieu of common since to spend a million to use a gift from the Bowman family. AND, they charge the town people to use it. Our neighbors in Hamden added a pool to the high school and after it was built allowed it's town people to use it (at least back then) at no cost, since they had paid for it through taxes. Where was the feasibility study? Where was the public debate for input?

Let's do this right. Essentially, the pool is a park. It is a tremendous community resource. We…Read More need to ensure that nothing like this ever happens again. Plain and simple, it's time for a modern permanent structure, much like the one in Milford. It will be the best facility in the state, and frankly, anything else is short-changing the residents of this town.
The youth of this town deserve an opportunity to swim year round as they have been. The elderly deserve their classes. The valuable life and safety skills deserve to be learned by all, and we should maximize the potential of each. Our nationally renowned swim programs should not have to bus to odd locations at odd hours to practice, also at taxpayer expense.
I have made my case several times on the Patch website for the value this facility brings to town. The wording of the article titles, and the articles themselves often put a negative spin on the situation from the get go. It has been a series of sensationalist articles since February.
Let us all be clear, the value of the Cheshire Community Pool far outweighs any costs, which for townspeople are still minimal. Those that like to complain need to look at the value such a facility brings to the town, before they gripe about tax dollars. It's an asset to the community, much like all our ball fields, parks, and even the library. None of those are expected to make money. Despite what promises were made in yesteryear, when the pool was built, Cheshire needs to get over the past, and build for the future. We need to continue being one of the best towns in Connecticut and the nation, and not take a step backwards.
We should take pride in what we have, and develop it to its fullest. The two biggest storms of my lifetime have destroyed two bubbles. That kind of damage could not have been foreseen when the decision to put a bubble up was made in the first place. We have seen what can happen, and the correct thing to do would be to make the most of the current investment the town has made. No more half-measures are acceptable. All the way, for all year swimming.
